Sports give people with a disability a platform
IPC President Sir Philip Craven on Thursday urged members of society to give people with a disability more opportunities to demonstrate their value.Members of society have advantages and disadvantages as well as different characters, so persons with a disability are entitled to opportunities to embody their value and aspirations, the president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) told the official website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Sports can bring confidence to people with a disability and help them rehabilitate and realize their dreams and values, he stressed.
The Paralympic Games, he said, are competitions of the highest level for persons with a disability. At the same time, these games are also helpful to the spectators, who will understand that persons with a disability are outstanding, too; they can run fast like Oscar Pistorious; they, like everyone else, can have joy and fun in this platform.
In the eyes of the public, people with a disability are not perfect, but nobody is perfect, Craven said.
If all members of society treated people with a disability with the right viewpoint, accessible facilities would be provided to the city’s squares, shopping centers and office buildings to benefit wheelchair users, persons with a visual disability, mothers and children, the president said.
In an ideal society, all people are open-minded in their relationship with others. This is not only in the interest of people with a disability but also of the whole society, he said.
