3月7－9日に山形市内で開かれる知的障害者のスポーツ大会「スペシャルオリンピックス（ＳＯ）冬季ナショナルゲーム・山形」に向け、県内選手の練習が本格化し、9日には、競技ごとに直前合宿や合同練習が行われた。
大会で行われる7競技のうち、アルペンスキー選手団はこの日から、3日間の合宿をスタート。選手16人とコーチ11人は早速、出場種目ごとに分かれ、同市の蔵王温泉スキー場竜山ゲレンデでトレーニングに臨んだ。
大回転のグループは、素早いターンを身に付けるため、本番より旗門の間隔が狭いコースに挑戦。「下を向かずに前を見て」「旗門の位置をしっかり確かめてスタートしよう」などと指導を受けながら、選手たちは互いに「頑張れ」と声援を送り、それぞれ技術を磨いた。
ヘッドコーチの岡崎雪華さん（上山高等養護学校教諭）は「技術の向上はもちろん、親元を離れ、幅広い年代の仲間と共同生活をすることで、団結や自立心を養える。大会が近づき、選手の気持ちも盛り上がってきた」と話していた。
