１９９８年２月の長野冬季五輪開催から１０年を迎え、「長野オリンピック１０周年記念式典」（長野市などでつくる実行委員会、日本オリンピック委員会主催）が９日、長野市のビッグハットで開かれた。大会関係者、出場した選手、ボランティアで携わった市民ら約２０００人が参加。「子どもたちの参加」「自然との共存」「平和と友好」の３つを理念に掲げた大会を振り返った。
ボランティア活動や国際化、平和への取り組みなど、五輪を機にナガノにまかれ、育ってきた芽をどう実らせるか。次世代への継承を含め、五輪開催の意義があらためて問われる時代に入る。
市内のジュニアスケート選手らが、長野五輪に参加した７２の国・地域の旗を手にリンクを滑ってオープニングを飾った後、実行委会長の鷲沢正一・長野市長が開会宣言。竹田恒和・日本オリンピック委員会（ＪＯＣ）会長は「長野五輪で日本選手団は冬季大会史上最高の成績を残し、子どもたちに夢と希望を与えた。選手強化やオリンピックムーブメントの推進に努めたい」と述べた。
国際オリンピック委員会（ＩＯＣ）からは猪谷千春副会長らが出席。サマランチ元会長は「３万人以上のボランティアの熱意、日本国民が示した親愛の情は一生忘れない」とのメッセージを寄せた。
同日夜には１０周年記念行事の一つで、善光寺本堂などを五色の光で照らす「第五回長野灯明まつり」が開幕。三門（山門）前でのオープニングセレモニーでは雪の中、長野五輪開会式で聖火台に点火した伊藤みどりさん（元フィギュアスケート選手）、スキージャンプの金メダリスト船木和喜選手らがトーチを持って参道を走り、聖火台に見立てた台に点火した。
平和を祈る鐘の音が響く中、５色のライトが三門などを照らし出すと、集まった大勢の人たちから歓声が上がった。
