Thousands answer call for volunteers for 2008 Olympics

The recruitment of volunteers for the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games has seen an overwhelming response since it was launched on Monday.

According to the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee (BOCOG), by Wednesday afternoon, more than 43,000 people in Beijing had registered to be volunteers, including more than 24,000 university students applying through the campus recruitment offices. The rest handed in applications through websites and local youth organizations.

Meanwhile, the Beijing Olympic Call Center had received more than 22,000 phone inquiries, including 108 from overseas.

Most frequently asked questions were regarding the basic application requirements of the volunteers, followed by the online registration addresses for the citizens in Beijing, a working staff said.

The call center is running 24 hours a day with 50 telephone booths for 120 call center workers.

In addition to the hotline center, 50 information counters have been set up across the city to help answer questions from curious citizens.

About 31,160 people have inquired from these stations before Wednesday afternoon, a BOCOG press release said.

A total of 70,000 volunteers will be needed for the Olympic Games, and another 30,000 for the Paralympic Games. The majority of the volunteers will be recruited from universities in Beijing, with rest coming from other parts of the country and abroad.
